TV Commercials

recently I’ve been paying more attention to commercials on tv.  I’m making a pretty long list of products to boycott.  I never realized how many products try to appeal to women by showing them what great mothers they can be because they bake the best cookies or serve the best after school snacks.  I’m appalled and irritated that these companies think that will work with women.

Of the products I noticed that do that are Totino’s Pizza Rolls and Pillsbury Toaster Pastries.  When I was looking up a site to link for the blog, I found that these products are owned by the same corporation! They probably have the same marketing department making their ads for them.  They both have a woman’s voice saying how she makes these foods for her kids because she knows they love them, and in turn love her for making them.  They also advertise how she can get double coupons for her children’s school.

The ad is targeted at stay at home moms who it is assumed volunteer at their kids school, of course because they live for their children and have no outside interests of their own to fill their time.  All these mom’s want is to make their children happy, they don’t care if the food they are feeding their kids is complete junk food.  Toaster pastries are not on the recommended list of breakfast foods for any healthy diet and the same goes for the pizza rolls as a snack in the afternoon.

If this company thinks that I am going to buy their products so my kids will look lovingly into my eyes because I serve them those products they are way way off.  And, even when I was a “stay at home mom” I had a life of my own as well as taking care of my kids.  In addition, fathers can make snacks for thier children too.

I am also not loving the Electrolux commercials with Kelly Ripa.  She says at the end of the commercial, after she has washed the clothes, put them away and made sure her husbands shirt doesn’t have any wrinkles and fed her kids chocolate chip cookies “be even more amazing”.  She is speaking to women and telling them to be super moms.  In reality, she has lots of folks working for her; she isn’t doing “it all”, but espousing that to other women who work and are mothers.  How dare she?  the link is:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BM-yQLZbatc&feature=related

The last commercial that has come into my radar that I am going to have to think twice before buying from is Target.  They are selling a women’s hat and when she comes across the hat in the Target store she imagines herself wearing the hat and being married with the perfect looking husband and perfect children.  It’s ridiculous!  As if that would make her life complete, a perfect man and perfect children!  How bout they show her wearing the hat and being a scientist or mathematician and loving her job?  Why does it have to be that a women is most content when she has the perfect man and kids?  Can’t find the link to that one, but I’m sure you’ve seen it.  Ridiculous!  Target better change their attitudes about the women who shop in their stores.
